From start to finish, including siteseeing and souveniers, we spent a total of $13,000.
This includes:
Filing INS I-600A FBI Fingerprinting Homestudy State, Federal and Ukrainian Document Authentications Airfare for us and our son Food and other essentials while in Ukraine US Embassy in Warsaw Fees Hotel and other expenses in Warsaw Sightseeing and Souveniers in Ukraine and Poland Facilitation/Translation Expenses -Translation of all English Documents into Ukrainian -Translation of all Ukrainian Documents into English -Accomodations and transportation in Kiev -Train to region...and back again -In-region interpretation and translation -Accomodations in region -Adoption related transportation in Region -Notary costs All other expenses and fees
We traveled in the summer and our airfare was far more expensive than others who have traveled in off-peak season. Homestudy costs vary greatly depending on what state you live in...ours was right around $1000.
One of the best things about doing an independent adoption is that you don't have to pay all of the money up front...it is pay as you go! This was a very big factor for us!
*The Federal Government offers a $10,000 adoption credit on income taxes owed.
In a hundred years from now it will not matter how much money I had in the bank or what kind of car I drove...but, that I was important in the life of a child.
